I may hate going to a govt school or get admitted in a govt hospital but will definitely not fail to try for a govt jobs in India. Why do you think, people are obsessed about govt jobs in India? What is it that drives the youth towards securing a govt job? Is it the pay scale or compensation; or the security that your job is secured till the time you retire unlike a private sector market where no one is secured when it comes to job?
Anybody can get axed in a private sector, be it the employee in the lowest ranking in the company or the CEO himself. The recent example of Rahul Yadav’s exit from Housing.com is in itself a biggest learning that no matter how strong you are – your job is still at stake at all times.
I have also seen parents asking their children to take up govt employment with the offer that you don’t have worry even after you are retired. The lifelong pension will take care of your needs and you need not depend on your children for your day to day needs. The more interesting lot of parents feel that securing a govt job ensures that your son or daughter’s demand will increase while looking out for prospective marriage alliances.
Why Government Jobs
As a child one aspires to grow up and become a doctor or an engineer or if possible a civil servant in the ranks of an IAS or an IPS officer. Our Hindi melodramatic movies that we grew up watching showed us that money is equivalent to power. We grew up wanting to make more money and looking for means to achieve our goals.
In the 90’s people were more keen on joining the private sector bandwagon since the money was high. Added to it was the entry of the BPO sector which resulted in the youth targeting such organizations to make quick bucks while still trying to complete their graduation. The so called American work culture came in with the onset of the BPOs. The Queen’s English was slowly replaced with the Americanised English. People around started speaking in accentuated English.
The traditional concept of going to office that we grew up watching our parents do everyday where they left in the morning and came back in the evening at a fixed time was slowly replaced with cabs coming to your doorsteps in the night and dropping back home in the morning. Money paid was very lucrative and this prompted the youth to consider this as a long term career.
Govt Jobs Salary
On the other hand, the govt sector did not appeal the youth since it wasn’t as lucrative as the private job. The pay scale was much lower and they did not feel connected to the kind of jobs that were opening up for them. It sounded more cool to state that I work with an MNC in comparison to I work as a clerk in the state department.
However, the trend has started to change in the recent past. The reasons may be numerous starting from the fact that with the new pay commissions that were approved in the past, people in govt sectors are getting a competitive compensation in comparison to their private employee counter parts. Added to it is the perks that all the govt employees and their immediate family can enjoy are numerous.
Timings in Govt Jobs
In comparison, the private sector is known for the hectic and long working hours which leave one with no time for their family. The stress related medical disorders such as hypertension, heart related disorders, diabetes, cholesterol level rise, obesity related disorders, and spine related disorders are on the rise because of sitting in front of the computer screens for long and lack of bodily movement or exercises.
Though govt jobs also have hectic schedule now a days but its less as compared to private jobs.
Security in Govt Jobs in India
The very awesome aspect of govt jobs in India is the security, you get. Security in terms of pension throughout your life.
There is no system of hire and fire in govt jobs. You have the job security for your entire life time.
So the future is definitely govt jobs in India. What is your view on this?
